Peter C. Cousins, Ph.D., ABPP
With nearly one in two marriages ending in divorce it is
no secret that the family today is in some trouble.
Although few enter a marriage feeling that if it doesn't
work out they will hit the eject button, the statistics say
it all. It is difficult to stay married in today's world, no
matter how much we seem to want to do so! When
children are involved of course, the stakes for them
can be quite high if the marriage doesn't work out. Dr.
Cousins offers both preventative counseling for
couples contemplating marriage and couple/marriage
counseling for couples and families who are already in
trouble, and services for blended families who are in
that in between state.
For the preventative approach or "premarital
counseling, " Dr. Cousins offers couples the benefit of
both a formal and informal assessment by using the
PREPARE/ENRICH customized premarital
questionnaire so that individuals can feel assured that
they have had a comprehensive discussion with their
partner on all of the various facets of personality,
attitudes and beliefs, so that they will face fewer
surprises later on as they look toward marriage. Those
who openly participate in these evaluations will have a
better understanding of themselves as well as their
partner and how the two of them fit together, as well as
potential problem areas which should be addressed
before they walk down the aisle and some skills to
better their relationship and some practice executing
these skills.
Of course most people who call a marriage counselor
or psychologist because their relationship is already in
trouble, and usually it has been in trouble for a long
time. By some estimates couples wait seven years
before picking up the phone and asking for help,
although my experience is that recently, the amount of
time couples are waiting before calling is lessening as
each year goes by, as couples realize more and more
the value of getting a little help earlier on. Rather than
focus on the latest fad treatment Dr. Cousins
synthesizes many approaches to give each couple
what they need whether it be discussing their
problems in a neutral setting, learning new skills,
understanding their family of origin better, their partner
better, or acquiring a greater capacity for intimacy.
Many of the concepts of Emotionally Focused Couples
Therapy, Cognitive Therapy, and Dialectical Behavior
Therapy are used, as well as other integrative
systemic approaches.
Dr. Cousins has studied with some of the top couple
therapists and has taught and trained couple
therapists himself, as well as having done research
himself on marital emotional communication and
published in top journals such as The Journal of
Marriage and the Family and Family Process. He has
a good understanding of what each couple needs and
is able to understand how to bring happiness back
into relationships through understanding, and
experience. Dr Cousins is a Certified Relationship
Enhancement therapist as well as Board Certified in
Couple and Family Psychology by the American Board
of Professional Psychology.
