Many people will experience a depression at some
time during their lives, and in these times rates of
depression are increasing markedly.  When someone
has their first episode of depression there are changes
which occur in the body and mind, so it is important to
get treatment quickly, so that the changes that have
occurred become less permanent.
As human beings we have feelings, thoughts, behaviors,
and our physical reactions.   Depression includes a
pervasive feeling of sadness, negativity, lethargy or
agitation, which persists for more days than not for over two
weeks.  It can effect our sleep, appetite, thinking and
concentration, digestion, as well as our relationships.  It is
important to get this problem treated as soon as possible
so that this problem will not become more permanent or
habitual.
How can talking help?
Talking by itself is NOT what usually helps, but when the
talking leads to changes in  behaviors and thoughts, then
feelings can follow.  Although habitual feelings and thoughts
may have taken years to develop, they
do not take as long
to change.  A lot of change can occur in the first couple of
months.
By targeting specific key thoughts and behavior
patterns what seems like everything is terrible all the
time can be changed to where there is light at the end
of the tunnel and things begin to change.  It takes a
skilled experienced therapist to help people figure out
what are the key thoughts and behaviors that need
change, so that change can bring happiness again!

Depression includes negativity about self, the world,
and the future.  Often thinking is characterized by
vague,  and overgeneralized and can lead to a
vicious cycle of despair.   Counseling can change
this thinking by methods which can take as little as
a few minutes a day.
